Our Business: Recycling

Recycling is our Business

Scrap steel amounting to as much as one million tons a year is collected in Switzerland alone - an untold number of vehicles have to be taken off the road, steel bridges and factory bays must be replaced by new structures, etc. Gerlafingen converts roughly three quarters of this scrap mountain into high-quality products.

Scrap steel is a valuable secondary raw material in a country short of raw materials such as Switzerland. Therefore, we have in Switzerland a dense network of collection points, scrap processors and traders. But scrap is never uniform, and the many different metals it contains must be efficiently sorted out to a high purity level to obtain perfect products.
After all, clean scrap is cleaner to process and that, of course, benefits the environment.

Recycling of scrap closes the materials cycle with numerous benefits: transport routes are short - three quarters of scrap metal are supplied by rail - and valuable raw materials are preserved. The environment is the winner here.

We explain here  "from scrap to steel".
